8 Tips to PCS to a Safe Home

PCS (or a military move, for our non-military friends) season is quickly approaching. We ourselves are preparing to move in less than 60 days. This will be our third military move and our first since being exposed to toxic mold in our housing. As we prepare ourselves for this upcoming venture we have compiled some tips to make your move in to a new home as safe as possible. While most of the tips apply to the military or military housing, it is true for off base housing and civilians as well. 1. Do not sign the lease without seeing the home first. I  understand  100% how complicated this statement is; we ourselves have done this because A. we didn't know any better and B. military housing communities are NOTORIOUS for doing this to families. They use scare tactics to force new residents in to contracts and honestly it is NOT okay. They may try and email a lease over "for your convenience" or have you sign before touring the home. It can be avoided, please do not sign ...

Ditch & Switch...Non-Toxic Shampoos

One component of our blog is to inform on toxic products. We also want to share where we get our resources from so that you can continue to research the products in your home. Today we are exploring toxic shampoo and the safe alternatives out there. We selected a shampoo that we have used for years, Suave Rosemary + Mint. Sounds pretty natural right since they use herbs in the title huh? Well, it's not. So, here we go.

The first app we used to discover ingredients is the Think Dirty app. You can scan barcodes or type in the search bar what product you're looking for. This is a great place to start, especially from your phone. Here is what the app had to say about this Suave shampoo. The higher the rating, the less it recommends the product, so an 8 is bad. Then it lists why. It contains formaldehyde releasing agents, which are known carcinogens. The list continues with ingredients that are more carcinogens, skin irritants (eczema, contact allergies, and dermatitis), and more.

A second source of information is EWG.org. This is the same product taken from their page. They have a lower score from the same product (and you may see Think Dirty lower sometimes, they explain why they score how they do).
Another good source for ingredient research is Living Well Mama on Facebook and the Crunchi Blacklist which lists toxins alphabetically and in an easy-to-understand way. So, what do you do if you want a truly non-toxic shampoo? There are tons of organic shampoos (which is important to avoid pesticide contamination) with safe ingredients. Below we are using Carina Organics as an example (which we use) but there are more out there. You can use the infograph at the top to peruse through safe shampoos for you and your family. The four in the image are Carina Organics, Poofy Organics, Innersense, and Evolvh.

Since shampoo is a frequently used bathroom item, it would be worth the money to buy a clean, non-toxic shampoo that won't send toxins in through the scalp. Look for shampoo free of parabens, sulfates, propylene glycol, phthalates, "fragrance", and silicone. These are the most common offenders that many companies tout to be free of, as you continue to research you will find more common offenders hidden in the ingredient lists. Continue to use resources to learn more about ingredients and the dangers of what is in your products.

Here's to moving on,
