8 Tips to PCS to a Safe Home

PCS (or a military move, for our non-military friends) season is quickly approaching. We ourselves are preparing to move in less than 60 days. This will be our third military move and our first since being exposed to toxic mold in our housing. As we prepare ourselves for this upcoming venture we have compiled some tips to make your move in to a new home as safe as possible. While most of the tips apply to the military or military housing, it is true for off base housing and civilians as well. 1. Do not sign the lease without seeing the home first. I  understand  100% how complicated this statement is; we ourselves have done this because A. we didn't know any better and B. military housing communities are NOTORIOUS for doing this to families. They use scare tactics to force new residents in to contracts and honestly it is NOT okay. They may try and email a lease over "for your convenience" or have you sign before touring the home. It can be avoided, please do not sign ...

Our Non-Toxic Bathroom Routine

Did you know that it is okay to slowly convert to non-toxic household items? That's what we (okay, I, me, Rachel) did. Otherwise it would have broken the bank to swap out everything we had all at once. Every two weeks I would purchase a new bathroom item and over the course of time I was able to get all of our showering items (and most of our bathroom items) converted to non-toxic products.

First up, hair care. There are lots of shampoos and conditioners that claim to be natural, but are they really? Nope. We used to used Suave Naturals which as I came to find out has a ThinkDirty score of 8 (which is bad, more details in that post link). We switched to Carina Organics and have loved it. We can pronounce every ingredient and they use certified organic ingredients. I would note here that we have very low hair-care needs; no dyed hair, minimal styling, and no major concerns (volume, dandruff, etc). Carina Organics is relatively basic in terms of additional benefits outside of clean non-toxic care but it does work well and we all like it. We also use their unscented styling gel and I make my own organic dry shampoo. If you have advanced hair care needs, check out our shampoo swap post to see other safe shampoos that have outstanding performance in those areas.

Next up, body wash. While one of our bottles of shampoo also doubles as body wash (the lavender) we actually use the body bar from Crunchi. It is an organic, non-toxic charcoal bar that has a light scent (which I love and prefer) and leaves us squeaky clean skin.

Face and skin care. My daughter and I have the most facial needs when it comes to care. We both use the facial bars from Crunchi. I need exfoliation pretty consistently so I make my own scrub and masks (organic and natural ingredients only). Then I follow up with simple moisturizers from Crunchi and a serum from Truly Organic as well. Something to love about Crunchi is that they use organic ingredients, are vegan, and do not use any blacklisted ingredients that many "green" companies use. Truly Organic, like Carina Organics, also makes their serum to order which means you are getting the freshest products.

Other miscellaneous items we have swapped is toothpaste, we are using Dr. Brite in mint and berry. The texture is different than conventional toothpaste but no one seems to mind. My husband did note that he misses the bubbles from regular toothpaste. Of all the natural/homemade toothpastes I have ever tried, Dr. Brite definitely has the best flavor and I have been very happy with its performance.

Lastly deodorant. We have changed two things; first we do a weekly armpit detox and second I (Rachel) use a natural deodorant. There are several good ones out there that are aluminum free with all natural ingredients, Pretty Frank (formerly Primal Pit Paste) is a good one.

We have very few things left to swap in the  bathroom, but the journey is about progress and not perfection. If you have questions about other good brands, check out our resources page or Living Well Mama on Facebook. She has an awesome master list with several non-toxic options under each personal care category. Every time we get a new non-toxic item we post it on instagram, you can check us out there by clicking here. Each little swap makes an impact and over time you can have a non-toxic bathroom routine as well. What swap are you most excited for? Comment below!

Here's to moving on,
